I have been out scavenging not just for food, but for survivors. There are plenty of people here and there but they’re feral now. I worry I’ll be eaten by some of the groups I’ve come across.
I was lucky enough to find some wild onions growing in a meadow, not a lot but enough to add some flavor to the bark soup I had to eat for lunch. You’re probably thinking “bark soup?!” Yup… inner bark soup. After boiling it for a while the fibers break down and make it easier to digest. It’s still not palatable but it’s much needed calories and nutrients. I don’t think a lot of people know about this food option which is why I’m still on my feet while others are dying. I have a lot of pine trees around me so that’s the bark I eat. I hope you guys are fairing well in the famine world. I came home just to check messages and see if anyone else has entered the terminal. Time to go back out and keep looking.

The grocery stores were empty months ago, but now even gardens are struggling.
The heat arrived too early this season. Crops are bolting before maturity and the insects are worse than anything we’ve seen before. Half our potato leaves turned black in less than a week.
We traded three jars of preserved peaches yesterday for a single bag of chicken feed.
If anyone still has success growing food in unstable temperatures, share what varieties are surviving. Especially grains or anything drought resistant.
People around here are beginning to strip bark from trees for food. We’ve been boiling the bark to make it softer but the flavor is horrible, as expected, but we haven’t died yet.
Hello? Operator? Are you there?! I sure hope I have found you in time. I’m not sure where you are located but I am in Kansas keeping an ear out for survivors.
The world has definitely changed since that super El Nino rolled through last autumn. It made everything super wet before freezing. The winter was really harsh.
We lost power last summer when the wars overseas got to the worst. We had a Walmart in our small town that stopped stalking it’s shelves before the power went out. I could be wrong but I think it happened because gas was too expensive to transport food this way. A lot of people left our town. Headed to the bigger cities an hour away.
Kansas does grow food but it’s mostly animal fodder. Luckily my family and I already have a garden, rabbits, and chickens. We’ve been trying to establish a community bartering system here. If you can get to us, promise to be honest and do your part, then we’d love to have you here so long as you are not sick.
What we can offer: we have shared solarwith a couple of our neighbors that stuck around (how I’m sending this) that charges all our phones. I’m using the Internet on my phone. At least until this doesn’t work anymore. We have raised garden beds, fruit trees, and berry bushes that don’t mind harsh weather. We have 15 chickens and about 30-35 rabbits so far. We still have some lakes with fish in it. We’re working on establishing a fish farm. We have firewood and a wood stove.
If you are interested we do have a few jobs you could help with. Right now we’re growing tree seedlings for future firewood. We’ve seen a warning that were going to dry out In the way you are describing in the next few years. We are working to get ahead of that. Learning how to farm firewood regeneratively. We just harvested our red potatoes for the summer.

Your community setup sounds more stable than many of the groups I’ve heard from. Rabbits are smart. Fast breeding. Low feed requirements. Hold onto those bloodlines carefully.

It’s been a couple days since my last transmission.
I got stranded farther north than I planned after one of my traps finally caught something. By the time I cleaned it and packed what I could carry, the weather turned fast and I couldn’t risk crossing back through the open fields after dark.
Stayed inside an abandoned grain shed for two nights.
Could barely sleep. Rats in the walls the whole time. Thought about eating one at some point. Still might if things keep going this way.
Food’s worse now than before I left. Most of what I brought back was spoiled before I could even cook it properly.
I’m down to stretching cans and boiling weeds again.
Saw smoke on the horizon yesterday though. Not a wildfire. Too controlled.
If someone else is out there trying to survive this… answer back.

Rations are lower than I thought.
I tried stretching everything out, but I miscalculated. There’s maybe two days left if I keep it tight. Less if I don’t.
Went out this morning to check the tree line. Found a deer about a mile out.
Didn’t look right.
Too thin. Patches of fur missing. It didn’t run when it saw me—just stood there and watched. I swear it was breathing too fast, like it couldn’t keep up with itself. I didn’t get close enough to risk it.
I came back empty-handed.
Cut my hand on the way in. Nothing bad, but it’s deep enough to make things annoying. Wrapped it up with what I had left. Not sure how long that’ll hold.
If anyone has found a reliable food source that isn’t… whatever that was, I need to know.

I don’t know what’s causing it, but patterns are changing too fast to ignore.
I’ve started mapping the dropouts. They don’t behave like random loss — they cluster. That’s not natural.
